The Story of Govardhan Puja — Why Krishna Lifted the Mountain

The story of Govardhan Puja is one of the most beloved episodes in the Bhagavata Purana and the Harivamsa. Here is the complete account:

In the village of Vrindavan, every year the Gwalas (cowherd community) would perform an elaborate puja for Indra Dev, the king of rain, to ensure good rains for their crops and cattle. One year, young Krishna questioned this tradition. He argued that the rains came from natural cycles — from the clouds and from the Govardhan mountain itself, which provided grass and shelter for their beloved cows. He urged the villagers to worship Govardhan mountain instead — the true nourisher of their community.

The villagers trusted their beloved Krishna and followed his advice. Indra was outraged. He unleashed the most terrifying storms — seven days and nights of relentless rain, lightning, and flooding — intended to destroy Vrindavan entirely.

In response, Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan mountain on the little finger of his left hand — holding it up like a giant umbrella for all seven days while every person, cow, and living being of Vrindavan sheltered beneath it. No one went hungry; no one was harmed.

On the seventh day, Indra finally surrendered. He came down, bowed to Krishna, and acknowledged him as the Supreme Being. Krishna placed the mountain back gently and declared that Govardhan mountain should henceforth be worshipped as a form of Krishna himself — and the first celebration of this victory became the first Govardhan Puja.

This story, recorded in the Bhagavata Purana (Canto 10), teaches us that genuine devotion and the protection of nature are more powerful than ritualistic fear-based worship.

Govardhan Puja Kaise Karein — Complete Step-by-Step Vidhi

Morning Preparation

  1. Brahma Muhurta Jaagran: Wake up before sunrise, ideally by 4:30–5:00 AM. The Pratah Kaal (early morning) puja is considered most auspicious.
  2. Snan: Bathe and wear clean, traditional clothes — yellow or orange is auspicious on this day.
  3. Puja Area Preparation: Clean the mandir area. If possible, use cow dung to make a small mound (Govardhan mountain symbol) in the puja area or courtyard.

Govardhan Sthapan (Making the Symbolic Mountain)

  1. In some traditions, a small mound of cow dung or grain/food items is shaped to represent the Govardhan mountain. Decorate it with flowers, diyas, and a small Krishna figure or image.
  2. In homes without courtyard access, a heap of food items (Annakut) on a large thali serves as the mountain symbol.
  3. Draw or place footprints (charana chinha) leading to the mound — symbolizing Krishna's arrival.

Annakut Sthapan

  1. Arrange all prepared food items on a large tray or table. This is the Annakut (mountain of food).
  2. Place a Krishna idol or framed image facing the food mountain.
  3. Decorate the arrangement with flowers, tulsi leaves, and small diyas.

Puja Kram

  1. Light diyas and incense. Ring the ghanta (bell) to invoke Krishna's presence.
  2. Perform Panchamrit Abhishek on the Krishna idol (milk, curd, honey, ghee, water).
  3. Offer Panchamrit + water to the Govardhan mountain symbol.
  4. Offer flowers, roli-chawal, and a tulsi garland to Krishna.
  5. Recite Govardhan Puja Stotra or Vishnu Sahasranama.
  6. Perform the Govardhan Parikrama — walk clockwise around the puja arrangement 7 times (symbolizing the Vrindavan villagers' parikrama of the actual mountain).
  7. Perform Aarti.

Annakut Bhog & Prasad Distribution

  1. After aarti, all the prepared food is officially accepted as prasad.
  2. Distribute generously to family, neighbors, and the poor. In Mathura-Vrindavan, Annakut prasad is shared with literally thousands of people — this spirit of generosity is the essence of the festival.

Chhappan Bhog — 56 Items for Annakut (Ghar ke Liye Practical List)

The traditional Chhappan Bhog (56 food offerings) is observed with great grandeur at Vrindavan temples. For home puja, prepare as many as you can — even 11–21 items done with love is considered complete:

CategoryItems
DairyKheer, peda, makkhan, dahi, makhan-mishri, panchamrit, rabdi
SweetsLaddu, barfi, halwa, jalebi, gulab jamun, khajur
Rice dishesPlain chawal, khichdi, pulao, rice kheer
BreadsPuri, roti, paratha, malpua
Savoury dishesAloo sabzi, kadhi, paneer, dal, pakoda
FruitsBanana, apple, pomegranate, coconut, seasonal fruits
Dry fruitsCashews, almonds, raisins, pista
BeveragesMilk, sugarcane juice, coconut water

Krishna's favourite offerings include makhan-mishri (butter with sugar), kheer, panchamrit, and tulsi leaves — always include these even if the full Chhappan Bhog is not possible.

Govardhan Puja Ke Din Gaay Ki Seva — Why Cows Are Honoured Today

On Govardhan Puja, cows hold special significance. The entire Govardhan episode centred on protecting the Gwalas' cattle — their livelihood and spiritual companions. On this day:

  • Cows are bathed and decorated with flowers, kumkum, and colourful fabric.
  • They are fed jaggery, grass, and special treats.
  • Their hooves are sometimes painted with alta (red dye).
  • In Vrindavan and Mathura, cows roam freely and are given garlands and prasad by devotees.

Even if you live in a city with no access to cows, donating to a gaushala (cow sanctuary) on Govardhan Puja day carries the same merit. You can also place a small cow figurine in your mandir alongside the Krishna idol as a symbolic gesture.
