Maa Durga ke 9 Roop — Navratri 2026 Mein Kaisi Poshak Pahnayen?

Maa Durga ke 9 Roop — Navratri 2026 Mein Kaisi Poshak Pahnayen?

Navratri is nine days. But it is not nine identical days.

Each day belongs to a different form of Maa Durga. A different name. A different energy. A different poshak. The way you dress Mata on Day 1 is not the way you dress her on Day 6. The yellow of Shailputri is not the red of Katyayani. Each roop has its own language — and her poshak is part of that language.

This guide is for the devotee who wants to do it right. Not just the colour — but the fabric, the embroidery, the weight, the meaning behind each choice. Because when you place the right poshak on the right form on the right day, the puja is complete in a way that goes beyond routine.

Sharad Navratri 2026 runs from Sunday, 11 October to Monday, 19 October. All nine forms, all nine poshaks — below.

Maa Durga ke 9 Roop aur Navratri 2026 Poshak (Quick Reference):

Who Are the 9 Forms of Maa Durga?

The nine forms — Navadurga — are the nine aspects of Adi Shakti worshipped across the nine nights of Navratri. Each form represents a distinct energy: creation, endurance, courage, light, motherhood, warfare, darkness, purity, and perfection. The poshak for each form echoes that energy — in colour, fabric, and weight.

Day 1 — Maa Shailputri: Why Yellow?

Maa Shailputri is the daughter of the mountains — Shaila means mountain, Putri means daughter. She rides a bull, carries a trident, and embodies the steadiness of the earth. Yellow is the colour of turmeric, of early morning light, of the first act of devotion.

A yellow silk poshak with a gold zari border is the traditional choice. The yellow should be saturated — not pastel, not ivory. Full, warm turmeric-yellow. The gold embroidery echoes the mountain's minerals. The fabric should have weight — silk or chanderi, not synthetics on Day 1.

Day 2 — Maa Brahmacharini: The Green of Devotion

Maa Brahmacharini is the form of Durga who performed intense tapasya — penance — for thousands of years to attain Lord Shiva. She holds a rosary and a water pot. She represents discipline and devotion in their purest form. Green is the colour of that growth — of a sapling that survives every season.

A green velvet poshak with white lace trim is the ideal choice. Not bright lime-green — but deep, forest green or jade. The white lace represents her ascetic nature. The velvet gives the poshak the richness that her perseverance deserves.

Day 3 — Maa Chandraghanta: Silver-Grey, the Warrior's Colour

Maa Chandraghanta wears a half-moon (Chandra) on her forehead like a bell (Ghanta). She is a warrior form — ten arms, each carrying a weapon. She rides a tiger and destroys evil with the sound of her bell. Grey is the colour of storm clouds before battle — power held still, about to release.

A silver-grey brocade poshak with silver embroidery is the traditional choice. The silver thread echoes the moon on her forehead. This is not a muted grey — it should shimmer. Brocade or jacquard fabric works best: structured, firm, like armour.

Day 4 — Maa Kushmanda: Orange, the Colour of the Sun

Maa Kushmanda is believed to have created the universe with her smile. Ku means a little, Ushma means energy, Anda means egg — she is the cosmic egg. She lives in the sun and radiates its energy. Orange is the colour of the sun at its full power.

An orange chanderi poshak with orange-gold work is the ideal choice. Chanderi fabric catches light beautifully — and on Kushmanda's day, light is everything. The embroidery should be in gold thread, not silver. Full, warm, solar orange — not the burnt orange of autumn but the brightness of noon.

Day 5 — Maa Skandamata: The White of a Mother's Love

Maa Skandamata is the mother of Skanda (Kartikeya, the god of war). She holds her infant son in her arms, and despite being a warrior goddess, her dominant energy on this day is motherhood — fierce, protective, unconditional. White is the colour of that love: clean, complete, without condition.

A white pure silk poshak with a minimal gold border is the ideal choice. White silk is the most delicate fabric — it requires care. But on Skandamata's day, delicacy is not weakness. It is the softness of a mother's arms, the precision of a warrior who knows exactly when to be gentle.

Our Durga Ji dress collection includes white poshaks in silk and velvet — stitched for 6-inch to 24-inch idols.

Day 6 — Maa Katyayani: The Most Auspicious Red

Maa Katyayani was born from the wrath of all the gods combined — created specifically to destroy the demon Mahishasura. She is the most fierce and the most worshipped form of Durga. Red is her colour, and it is the most important poshak day of all nine.

A deep crimson or bridal red velvet poshak with heavy zari work is the traditional choice. This is not everyday red — it is the red of sindoor, of mangalsutra, of sacred fire. The zari should be gold, the fabric should be heavy, and the poshak should feel like an event. Because on Day 6, it is one.

According to Shaktism, red on Katyayani's day brings courage, victory, and the removal of obstacles. Many devotees reserve their most expensive poshak for this day.

Day 7 — Maa Kaalratri: Royal Blue, the Colour of the Night Sky

Maa Kaalratri is the most ferocious form of Durga — black-skinned, dishevelled hair, riding a donkey. She destroyed the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha. Despite her fearsome appearance, she is the protector of devotees. Royal blue is not her natural colour — it is the colour of the sky she rules.

A royal blue silk poshak with silver embroidery is the ideal choice for Day 7. The blue should be deep and rich — not cobalt, not navy, but the specific blue of a clear night sky. Silver thread work on blue silk creates the effect of stars — appropriate for the goddess who commands the night.

Day 8 — Maa Mahagauri (Ashtami): Pink, the Purest Form

Ashtami — the eighth night — is one of the most celebrated nights of Navratri. Maa Mahagauri is the purest form of Durga: white-complexioned, peaceful, carrying a trident and a drum. She represents purity, serenity, and the power that comes from stillness. Pink is her colour in 2026 — the softest, most luminous colour of the nine.

In Navratri 2026, Ashtami falls on Sunday, 18 October. A soft pink brocade poshak with stone or pearl embroidery is the ideal choice. Not hot pink — blush pink, rose pink, the pink of a sunrise. The embroidery should have real stone or pearl-like work, reflecting Mahagauri's luminescence.

Kanya puja on Ashtami — where nine young girls are worshipped as forms of Devi — is one of the most sacred traditions of Navratri. The poshak on this day carries extra significance.

Day 9 — Maa Siddhidatri (Navami): Purple, the Grand Finale

Navami — the ninth and final night. Maa Siddhidatri is the giver of all Siddhis — supernatural powers, wisdom, liberation. She is worshipped by gods, humans, and demons alike. She sits on a lotus. She is the final, complete form of Adi Shakti. Purple is the colour of that completeness — royal, rich, full.

In Navratri 2026, Navami falls on Monday, 19 October. A rich purple velvet poshak with full gold zari work is the ideal choice. The purple should be deep — not lavender, not lilac, but regal purple. The zari should cover the poshak generously. This is the last poshak of the nine. It should feel like a finale.

After Navami comes Vijayadashami (Dussehra) on 20 October — the day of victory. The purple poshak closes the chapter that yellow opened nine days before.

Which Poshak Fabric is Best for Durga Ji — Silk, Velvet, or Brocade?

The fabric matters as much as the colour. Each form of Durga carries a different energy, and the fabric echoes it:

  • Silk — best for Shailputri (Day 1), Skandamata (Day 5), Kaalratri (Day 7). Lightweight, luminous, appropriate for forms associated with light and sky.
  • Velvet — best for Brahmacharini (Day 2), Katyayani (Day 6), Siddhidatri (Day 9). Heavy, rich, appropriate for forms associated with power and completion.
  • Brocade/Chanderi — best for Chandraghanta (Day 3), Kushmanda (Day 4), Mahagauri (Day 8). Structured, decorative, appropriate for forms associated with creation and purity.

For most home mandirs, the idol is between 6 and 18 inches. All Amfez poshaks are available in sizes to fit all idol heights — mention your idol size at checkout and our team will ensure the right fit.

Q: Which Navratri day is the most important for poshak?
A: Day 6 (Maa Katyayani, red) and Day 8 (Maa Mahagauri, pink — Ashtami) are considered the most important. Red on Day 6 is the most auspicious and traditionally the most elaborate poshak. Ashtami is the most celebrated evening of Navratri in most regions.
