What Is the Story of Tulsi Vivah — The Sacred Legend from the Puranas?

The story of Tulsi Vivah is one of the most moving tales in Hindu devotional literature, recorded in the Padma Purana and the Devi Bhagavata Purana.

Vrinda — the devoted wife: There was a demon named Jalandhar who had become invincible because of the unwavering pativrata dharma (marital fidelity) of his wife, Vrinda. No god could defeat him as long as Vrinda's devotion remained unbroken. At the gods' request, Vishnu appeared disguised as Jalandhar and broke Vrinda's vow through deception. Jalandhar was then defeated and killed.

Vrinda's curse and blessing: When Vrinda discovered the deception, she was devastated and cursed Vishnu to become a stone — the sacred black stone known as Shaligram. But her own divine purity transformed her after death into the Tulsi plant — the holiest of all plants. Vishnu, honouring her supreme devotion, promised that he would never accept any puja without Tulsi leaves, and that he would marry Vrinda/Tulsi every year on Kartik Ekadashi.

This is the origin of Tulsi Vivah — a marriage that honours a devotee's sacrifice and divine love. According to Tulsi Vivah tradition, performing this ceremony at home brings the merit equivalent to performing a daughter's wedding.

What Is Chaturmas and Why Does Tulsi Vivah End It?

Chaturmas (literally "four months") is the four-month period from Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi (Dev Shayani Ekadashi — around July) to Kartik Shukla Ekadashi (Dev Uthani Ekadashi — Tulsi Vivah day). During this period, Lord Vishnu is believed to sleep in Yoga Nidra in the cosmic ocean.

Because Vishnu — the preserver, the one who blesses marriages — is asleep, weddings and major auspicious ceremonies are traditionally not performed during Chaturmas. The moment he wakes on Kartik Ekadashi, the first act is his own marriage to Tulsi — and after that, the Hindu marriage season (Vivah Muhurat) officially begins.

In 2026, Chaturmas begins on 6 July 2026 and ends on 1 November 2026 (Tulsi Vivah day). Weddings and major ceremonies resume after 1 November.

How to Perform Tulsi Vivah at Home — Complete Puja Vidhi

Preparation (Afternoon)

  • Clean the Tulsi plant and surrounding area thoroughly.
  • Prepare the vivah mandap: arrange sugarcane stalks or bamboo sticks in four corners around the Tulsi plant to form a canopy frame. Drape marigold garlands or banana leaves over it.
  • Dress the Tulsi plant: drape a small red cloth or saree fabric around the pot. Apply kumkum and turmeric on the main stem. Decorate with small jewellery or bangles in some traditions.
  • Place the Shaligram or a small Vishnu/Krishna idol beside the Tulsi — this is the "groom."

Evening Puja Kram (During Pradosh Kaal: 5:45 PM – 8:15 PM)

  1. Snan and clean clothes: Bathe, wear auspicious colours — yellow or orange preferred.
  2. Lamp lighting: Light ghee diyas around the Tulsi mandap. Light incense.
  3. Kalash Sthapan: Place a copper kalash with mango leaves and coconut near the Tulsi.
  4. Sankalp: Take sankalp — state your intention: "I perform this Tulsi Vivah for the wellbeing of my family and for the merit of a kanyadaan."
  5. Jaimala (Garland Exchange): Place a small marigold garland on the Shaligram/Krishna idol, and another on the Tulsi. This is the symbolic "var mala" exchange.
  6. Pheras (Circling): Walk around the Tulsi plant and idol together 4 or 7 times clockwise, as in a wedding ceremony, while chanting Vishnu Sahsranama or "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya."
  7. Mangalsutra / Sindoor (optional): Some families apply a tiny dot of sindoor on the Tulsi plant stem — symbolising marriage.
  8. Tulsi Vivah Katha: Read or listen to the Tulsi Vivah katha (story of Vrinda and Vishnu).
  9. Aarti: Perform Vishnu Aarti or Tulsi Aarti.
  10. Prasad Distribution: Distribute sugarcane pieces, amla (Indian gooseberry), and sweets — all sacred to this festival.

Why Is Tulsi So Sacred — The Spiritual and Scientific Significance

Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum), known as Holy Basil, holds a unique place — it is the only plant that is worshipped as a goddess in her own right AND kept in virtually every Hindu home for daily use.

  • Vishnu's condition: Not a single puja to Vishnu or Krishna is complete without Tulsi. A plain food offering without Tulsi is considered incomplete (anrita) — with Tulsi, it becomes divine.
  • Laxmi's form: Tulsi is considered a form of Laxmi — keeping a healthy Tulsi plant is said to invite Laxmi's blessings and protect against misfortune.
  • Purifier of space: The Skanda Purana says the air around a Tulsi plant purifies a 10-metre radius of negative energies.
  • Scientific evidence: Tulsi releases oxygen 20 hours a day and is one of very few plants to do so. It has proven anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and adaptogenic (stress-reducing) properties.
